For some of us, cassettes never really went away.

John Davis of The Lees Of Memory, and Superdrag before that, is just such an individual. Over the course of 20+ years of record-making, his trusty Yamaha MT4X 4-track cassette recorder has been the foundation of everything he's created, in constant service for 2 decades. In addition to the demos for 99% of the Superdrag material, subsequent projects like Epic Ditch, The Lees Of Memory, Johnny Flame And The Jaws Of Victory and 3 solo LPs' worth of music have all sprung forth off the playback head of this same machine, and a good many friends and neighbors (like Senator Tom Pappas, Century Club, Cowboy Concept Y'all and Hurts To Laugh, to name just a few) have come through John's tiny home studio, High Bias!!! A Cassette-Based Operation™, just to have him do what he does best.

Which brings us to Cassette Store Day 2016, and this extra-special Semi-Pro Records release entitled, High Bias!!! A Cassette-Based Operation™ presents A Cast Of Heavy Hitters!!! 2007-2016. John has navigated a vast sea of XLIIs to bring you some of his favorite 4-track cassette productions from the past 10 years or so, plus a glimpse of the future with a sneak-peek into the process of composing the forthcoming 3rd LP by The Lees Of Memory ("It's Too Late To Change"). It's too late to stop recording on cassettes, too, apparently. John sums up his philosophy like this: 'If you've got a great song, it's going to be great with a 4-track and a 58. 64 tracks of overdubs and a million-dollar mic closet ain't gonna make it great. Plus I like being forced to work within those limitations. If I ping-pong as many times as possible, I can get 8 passes on the tape, plus I'm pretty adept at plugging little sounds into the gaps here and there. I like making decisions on the fly and committing fully right then and there. I think that's part of the magic of '60s recordings people don't factor in. Anyway, I record on 4-track, I always will, and nobody's gonna tell me I can't!' Mastered by Mike Purcell at County Q just so it'll bump a little harder in your jambox, we feel this compilation will hit the sweet spot for cassette lovers worldwide.
